Social Studies Homework

Favorite Recipe Cookbook Assignment

 As a class we are going to create a class cookbook where you will submit a recipe to be part of the cookbook. You should discuss this with your family before choosing a recipe.

When selecting your recipe consider the following:
The recipe may represent a family tradition.
The recipe may have been handed down from generation to generation.
The recipe may represent your family’s country of origin.
The recipe may be distinctly American or represent a foreign country.

Your recipe must meet the following requirements:
The recipe must have a minimum of 6 ingredients.
The recipe needs to be for a food "made from scratch", not simply
a combination of processed foods. The recipe must be approved by your teacher.

This is a multiple step project.

  The first step is to choose a recipe and write about it in your language notebook. This will be a rough draft. Your rough draft should include a short summary of what the recipe is and why you chose it. It should also include a list of ingredients and the steps to make the recipe.

French Update

Assalamu Alaikum Dear Parents

Here is the news from the French class:

Our daily routine is drilling the vocabulary related to our daily activities (opposites, gender, and numbers). We are talking about activities at school or at home. Al Hamdulillah, students are improving in expressing their basic needs in French and talking in French while working with a partner during French class.

We are still working on our story "Les Animaux du Bayou" and we will start soon Les questions partielles. This term we were busy writing letters to other English and French schools in Ontario and Montreal. The letters were addressed to grade 4 students. It was a great learning experience for our internet generation students. We worked on the process of writing and sending the letter. We are working on/reviewing some grammar concepts like double verbs construction, verbs avoir and être at the present tense.

In mid May, Insha’a Allah we will have the French café. To prepare students for this event we have started also working on the vocabulary related to French Café setting.

Tuesday, April 28, we are having the 5th French test: spelling, Les questions totales, les mots en ordre and verb avoir and être.
The spelling list for Tuesday is:
Je veux manger un biscuit.
Je prends un jus de pomme.
Combien ça coȗte?
Est-ce que ma commande est prête?
Je prends un gâteau au fromage.
Les questions totales and Les mots en ordre are related to the story. We already did these 2 activities and corrected them in class.

Speeches Due Monday


Speeches are due Monday! Here are some tips to help :)


Become familiar with the judging criteria that you will be marked on (rubric)

Memorize your speech. Use of note cards is acceptable for back up.

Dress appropriately- uniform only.

Make eye contact with the audience during your speech.

Be sure to stay in range of the podium microphone while making your speech.

Don’t go under or exceed the time limit of 3-6 minutes.

Don’t use visual aids.

Salam Parents,

Alhamdulillah we finished our novel study on Charlotte's web. Students completed their first 5 paragraph essay and MashAllah it was very well written!!

Students have begun the process of writing their speeches for the speech competition. Invention Research Project

Here is the outline of the Invention project that students are working on in class. Students had 4 periods to work on it already and many are done the research aspect. I am posting the requirements just in case students forget to bring it on the long weekend. The project is due on Wednesday April 8th, 2015.

Invention Research Project

You and a partner will investigate and find a major invention or development by a Muslim inventor. You will prepare a research presentation about the invention and inventor you choose to investigate. The presentation should include answers to the following:

History of the invention

  • Who was the inventor?
  • What year was it invented?
  • Where was it invented?
  • Why was it invented?

Name and Description of the invention

  • What does it do?
  • How does it work?
  • Other interesting facts
  • What does it look like? Include pictures

Impact of the invention

  • On society
  • On you

Future of this product

  • Describe what you think it would look like 10 years from now.

Resources you used

  • Provide a typed and properly formatted works cited page (use MS Word).
  • Minimum of 3 sources required
  • Include all resources.
